Aguirre: “We have to be aggressive and play with intensity”

The Valencia CF coach previews the game against Villarreal CF

Javier Aguirre held a press conference ahead of the Matchday 10 fixture in LALIGA EA Sports: A derby against Villarreal CF.

Copete, Foulquier and Sadiq

“None of them are in the squad. Copete and Foulquier are 90% of the way into their recovery, and Sadiq still has a little more to go, but we’ll have them back soon.”

The game against Villarreal CF

“We have to go for the win and take advantage of the fact that Villarreal CF played in the Champions League in midweek. We need to go out there mindful that we’re playing at home, with our fans behind us. We must win the individual duels, improve defensively, and press high up the pitch. In terms of our attack, against Racing and Athletic Club we created more promising situations and goal-scoring opportunities than our opponents, but we failed to convert them. Every game presents its own challenges; being considered the favourite comes down to the confidence you have in your own squad. The team need to play better and capitalise on our chances. We have to be aggressive and play with intensity.”

The squad

“The players are in the highest of spirits and eager to turn the situation around. We must continue to improve in every aspect.”

Usage of players from the VCF Academy

“Across six teams, I’ve given debuts to around 30 to 35 players. I even had a World Cup squad with a 17-year-old. If a player is in good form, he plays -it doesn’t matter whether he’s a homegrown talent or not. The team are in desperate need of points and are currently in the relegation zone. When I decide it’s time for them to play, they will play. They’re in good shape. Let’s hope we can get a win and give ourselves some breathing room.”

Harvey Elliott

“I have a friend in Liverpool who told me about him, and I’ve been impressed. He’s a good player. He’s not just an attacking midfielder; he can also play out wide. He’s a great person and is very eager. He’s also learning to speak Spanish now.”

The position in the table

“I understand the fans, as the club have spent several years fighting to avoid relegation. We are trying to improve things, and we hope that this improvement translates into wins and good results.”

Assimilating playing concepts

“You do that through victories. Goals are what change tactics and the questions being asked. Once we start winning, it will become clear what I want from the team: balance. We’re coming into this one with the handicaps of goals conceded and a lack of points, and we’re fighting to even things out. Each week, we need to take a step forward -especially when playing at home.”

Villarreal CF

“They look to be in good shape to me; they make excellent signings, have a good youth system, have established themselves over the last 20 years, and have a good coach. They’ll be a tough opponent, but we’re playing at home and we are Valencia CF. We’re appealing to our fans for their support, and we need our players to step onto the pitch with the character and confidence to win the game.”

Improvements

“The team need to start winning and find consistency in our play. Morale-wise, we’re in a good place; we just need that win that can liberate us.”

Valencia CF

“Every moment is a challenge. I want to give something back to Valencia CF. They have opened the door to me, the people here have treated me wonderfully, and I’m happy here. I want to bring joy to the fans. This is a historic club, and we’re trying to get back to where we belong.”
